Why Your (mistakenly) Afraid of Automating Social Media

Written by Jazzy | Feb 21, 2022 4:47:07 PM

We live in a world where seconds have become the most valuable units of time. Yet, even though there are plenty of automation tools to help people do their jobs more quickly and easily, making every one of those seconds count, they are hesitant to make full use of them.

Why is automation so intimidating?

It all comes down to a few perceived risks.

1. Less control. When a "robot" takes on a task, some people fear the quality of work might fall below their expectations or standard, reflecting poorly on them. It's a trust issue.

2. Less to do. Having a task they’re responsible for “taken away” makes people fear their job (or someone else's) is in jeopardy or their importance/worth to the company is diminished.

3. Loss of time. Finding, picking and implementing an automation tool takes time and effort. If it doesn't work, you've wasted the company’s time, energy and money. Nobody wants that.

3. Loss of reputation. For the person who recommended the automation, they could feel their reputation has been damaged if it doesn’t work.  The status quo is known, and therefore "safe," even if it's not optimal. New is unknown... AKA risky.

Why social media automation tools are a good (and safe) option

Social media automation is a win for your business whether you want to deliver social posts to one social media platform (like Instagram), or several (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc). It can help you build your social media presence, reach more people, generate more social proof and social engagement, build social authority and visibility for your brand – all that while still saving time on social media management so you can run your business.

But if you’re still nervous about automating, let’s look at why each perceived risk, shouldn't really be a concern.

Why Loss of control isn’t a concern. Good chance that you're either outsourcing your social content, so you're already trusting someone else with creating your social posts, or you're trying to find a few minutes in your week to try to do it yourself. That probably means you're not able to do "A" work. Giving control to an automated tool will likely produce better results. After all, you're giving control to a system that is expertly designed to do social media marketing.

Why Less to do in this situation is a good thing. Unless of course you're a social media company. But if you're a beauty salon owner, dentist, real estate agent or basically any other business, filling your social media calendar and scheduling posts is not a core function. Less time spent on social media means more time to spend on other important tasks. You’re not at risk of losing your job because your worth increases as you do more tasks that are core to your business.

Loss of time is a possibility, but social media automation has come a long way. For example, social media management tools have gotten to the point where you can schedule social posts months in advance and they'll be automated according to what you want to post about and what you want them to say. One huge bonus, you will become an expert in implementing and evaluating automation, rather than becoming an expert in social platforms.

Your reputation will improve. In the long run, knowing how to roll out automation is valuable to your business. Even if your first few automation projects don't produce as expected, the experience and expertise you gain will help your company better select automation in the future. Automation saves time, money, is becoming more sophisticated. Being knowledgeable on the subject impresses.

The bottom line: social media automation is safe for small businesses and is a huge time saver, plus it ensures your social accounts stay active and relevant.
